Timothy was knocked down by two Darklings and sent sprawling to the street after visiting the tomb of Marie Laveau in New Orleans. The Darklings entered his mouth and possessed him for weeks, until his family found a practitioner familiar with Voodoo (art by Ricardo Pustanio).

Timothy walked over to Xavier and took one of his hands in his. “Those mean boys shoved something in my mouth,” Timothy said. “Then they knocked me down and ran away.”

Claire thought back to that day in Bourbon Street when she thought she saw two shadowy figures push her son to the ground.

Xavier nodded. “Yes, the darklings. They just love to pick on boys and girls about your age.”

The healer’s method for dealing with the confused spirits was to place himself in a light trance and urge the possessing entities to come forward. When he could perceive that they had heeded his entreaties, he would converse with them and attempt to help them understand that they had lost their own bodies through physical death and that it was wrong to use the small boy’s body to maintain a hold on the Earth plane.

Claire could not suppress a small cry of distress.

“Do you mean that he will always be like this? He … We … we will all go crazy!”

Xavier shook his head reassuringly. “I have every confidence that it will close naturally in time.”

Ethan wanted to know how long a time.

“I honestly do not know,” Xavier repeated. “But until it does close, Timothy will continue to attract restless spirits. The evil darklings forced their energy down his throat. This is a strong energy to fight.”

Claire reminded her that they had heard some of the spirits agreeing to leave the boy.

“Yes,” Xavier agreed. “I feel confident that those with whom we spoke this evening will not return.”

“Thank God,” Claire said, closing her eyes as if in prayer.

“But,” Xavier emphasized, “I cannot guarantee that other new spirits will not slip into Timothy in their places.”

Ethan leaned down to place a supportive arm around Claire’s trembling shoulders.

“Each time your son is near the scene of a fatal accident, his mind will act like a magnet, drawing toward him those poor unfortunate entities who hover
